Your nonprofit has work to do—and people who need to find it. Google Ad Grants can help connect those people with your mission through up to $10,000 per month in Google Search advertising. Before you apply, check three things: your organization’s status, your Google for Nonprofits account, and your website.

Start with your organization

For U.S. applicants, Google requires IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) status or qualifying coverage under a group exemption. A 501(c)(4) designation alone does not qualify. Outside the U.S., check Google’s requirements for your country and whether Ad Grants is available there.

Government organizations, healthcare organizations, and academic institutions are excluded. However, eligible charitable foundations associated with healthcare organizations and philanthropic arms of educational institutions can qualify. An independent literacy or health research nonprofit should be evaluated on its own structure and activities.

Understand the special cases before applying

Churches and other religious nonprofits may qualify. In the U.S., automatic tax exemption alone is not enough for Google’s verification; IRS recognition or eligible group exemption documentation matters. Ads must relate to the organization’s mission and follow applicable advertising policies. Religious affiliation does not create a blanket ban on promoting worship or membership.

Fiscal sponsorship also needs a closer look. A sponsored project without its own 501(c)(3) status or qualifying group exemption cannot independently qualify. Do not assume a sponsor’s approval automatically covers a separate project.

Get verified, then activate Ad Grants

Apply for Google for Nonprofits first. Google’s verification partner, Goodstack, checks your organization and your connection to it. After approval, request Ad Grants activation; acceptance into Google for Nonprofits does not automatically activate advertising.

Have your legal name, EIN or charity registration number, website address, and proof of your affiliation ready. Keep your IRS recognition letter or group exemption records accessible. Goodstack may request supporting documents; a Form 990, bylaws, and incorporation records are not a universal submission checklist for every applicant.

Make your website useful before sending visitors

Google expects an owned website with substantial original information, a clear purpose, working navigation, good mobile performance, and HTTPS. Explain your programs, show credible organizational details, and test donation and contact buttons. Limited sales must support your mission with a clear explanation of how proceeds help. Avoid AdSense and excessive third-party advertising.

MSM also recommends clear contact details and an appropriate privacy policy, especially when collecting visitor information.

Approval is the beginning

The grant provides advertising access, not cash, and neither full monthly spending nor donations are guaranteed. Keep your status and website current, maintain compliant Google Ad Grant campaigns and conversion tracking, and respond to required program surveys when Google sends them. If a request is declined, use the reason given to correct the problem and follow Google’s resubmission or support process.
